TAP IN: Clothing Brand: Alexis and Robert Liddell

"The name Tap In had been brewing in my spirit for quite some time and the day I brought it to my husband’s attention, he had the perfect acronym, which is “Try Applying Pressure It’s Necessary.”"

Tap In their clothing brand and their second business is a children’s activity/coloring book called Alex and Friends, inspired by the passing of her husband’s mother and the birth of their son a month later in 2020.

Tap In Clothing Company specializes in comfort and stylish clothing. Everything is made by hand by me. The Liddle's likes to make sure that they are known for being bold and consistent. I think that’s the key to anything. "Consistency never loses a battle but being bold only makes you stronger. So, no matter the outcome, you still win. I’m proud that we have an identity that speaks for us as a brand and a team. A few things that set us apart from others are that we don’t follow trends, nor do we think that all avenues or lanes are for us. We love how natural things have been going. Being genuine and being reachable to people is what sets us apart. So, we stay Tapped In!"

The Madame CJ Walker Shoppe/WERD Studio: Ricci de Forest

Professionally as Ricci International (the "Acoustical Dandy"), is a hair stylist, beauty educator, and proprietor of the Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Shoppe and WERDStudio museum.

Ricci, an Ohio Native, eventually made his way down to Atlanta, GA opening his own shop called: "Ricci International."

Years later after establishing residency, he took a stroll around town and turned onto Hilliard Street and, out of the corner of his eye, spied a retail space with "Mme. C. J. Walker's Beauty Shoppe" on the window. He hit the brakes and soon afterwards found himself as the occupant of this personally and historically important space. To his surprise, he discovered several beauty tools associated with Madam C.J. Walker were left behind. Thus began Ricci's mission to create a sanctuary for the legacy of the beauty industry in his shop.

Two years later, a woman stuck her head into the shop and said, "Mr. Ricci, do you know the first black radio station in America was upstairs over your beauty shop?" Ricci was stunned by the revelation. Research into that station, WERD radio, confirmed the station's studios had been in a nearby location, as well as confirming the station's critical contributions to black music, black businesses, and civil rights.

Since then, Ricci has dedicated himself to preserving and honoring the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker and WERD by creating the Madam Museum in his beauty shop.

The museum is in two parts. One is dedicated to the memory of Madam C. J. Walker, whose hair and cosmetics products company had a beauty shop franchise at this location. The second part is dedicated to the legacy of WERD, the first black-owned and operated radio station in America, founded in 1949. The WERD Studio museum includes more than 15,000 jazz, blues, gospel, and other records, affectionately dubbed the “Great Wall of Vinyl,” as a tribute to the gift of music WERD gave to Atlanta.

Admission to the museum is by appointment, so contact them to arrange a date and time for your visit. There is charge of $5 per person. Additional donations are appreciated. WERD merchandise is also available for purchase.
